Insurance Agents: What does it take to succeed?
Are all of our leads "slam-dunk" and "shooting fish in a barrel" easy sales? I'm not going to lie to you. The answer is no. This is still the insurance business. The same rules apply. People still think insurance is too expensive (lets face it, it is), people still procrastinate even when they know they need it (lets face it, buying insurance is not enjoyable), people still want to price-shop (lets face it, why shouldn't they?), and there is still competition (where there is money to be made, there is always competition).
Even though you will not need to prospect as much when you have a steady stream of fresh leads coming in, you still must be a good salesman! You must be able to explain the value of your product, have the ability to make people take action by building a sense of urgency, have a good enough product to withstand price-shoppers and be competitive, and be better than the next agent trying to earn that prospect's business. Most importantly, always contact the prospect as quickly as possible by both phone call and email. If you can't get them right away by phone, most people respond well to a quick email that introduces your agency and seeks to setup a good time to talk. Further, you must be ready to call many times to get in touch with somebody. Lets face it, people are busy these days. You must be prepared to call someone at least 5 times to get in touch with them. Thats right - 5 times! It seems like alot but its really not, provided that you are organized.
Also, everybody knows somebody else who can buy insurance, so be sure to ask for referrals from you leads! The salespeople that make it in this business, and with internet lead generation, are always asking for referrals. Further, they always try to cross sell. Remember, each lead is more than just one sale. It is a relationship.
If you have what it takes to close you will be successful. These prospects are interested enough to go searching for an insurance quote. They are largely buyers. Most of the time a true need is present. They will buy at sometime from an agent somewhere. However, it is your responsibility to make certain that agent is you!
Selecting your Territory

That is because the average consumer is not aware of all the options available to them. Always take the largest number of product lines possible. Even if a customer does not initially request your favorite type of lead, that doesn't mean they don't need it or you can't quote it. For example, you may want more annuity leads. However, that is a low volume product line when compared to life insurance. However, when you get a life lead, you are welcome to ask them if they are interested in looking at an annuity. You would be surprised how well this works. Remember: The most important thing you gain is a client relationship you can build on and all of the referral and secondary business that comes from such a relationship
